What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty surgery accounts for the different types of procedures used to modify the labia which are the lips or folds of skin that are located at the vagina’s entrance. The vulva has two sets of skin folds or lips – the smaller inner folds are the labia minora.
Labiaplasty Quick Summary
What is labiaplasty?
In most instances, labiaplasty refers to procedures associated with the labia minora or the “inner lips”. It is used to change the size or shape of the labia or to correct asymmetry of the lips that may be causing discomfort or embarrassment. It is sometimes undertaken in conjunction with a vaginoplasty – a procedure designed to retighten the vagina after stretching from childbirth or because of the aging process.
Where is it done?: Your labiaplasty surgery will be performed at the brand-new Honeysuckle Day Hospital in Newcastle, a fully licensed and accredited day hospital which specializes in cosmetic surgery.
Length of surgery: If the surgery is for labiaplasty only, the procedure will usually take approximately 1 hour. When combined with other procedures, surgery will take up to 2 hours.

Do I qualify for labiaplasty?
If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your labia, it is likely that you will qualify for labiaplasty surgery.
Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty?
There are different reasons for seeking labiaplasty surgery. These can include:
- Cosmetic reasons to alter the appearance of the labia which may limit the ability to wear form-fitting clothing.
- Discomfort due to dryness, chaffing or irritation as result of the labia having an excess of tissue.
- Excess skin on the labia causing discomfort or embarrassment during intercourse.
What to expect during the consultation?
Dr. Verma will take a full medical history and discuss your concerns with you. He will examine your perineum and will then be able to discuss whether you are a suitable candidate for a labiaplasty and what you can expect from your surgery. He will also take photographs of your labia during your consultation. This is an important part of the process and allows for pre and post op documentation as well as an ongoing review of the healing process.
Where will the incisions/scars be?
Scarring after a labiaplasty procedure is minimal. This is because the incisions are very small and the tissue of the labia is thin and has a good blood supply. The labia also appear to be slightly wrinkled prior to surgery which hides any scars.
What type of Anaesthesia will be used?
The type of anaesthesia used is general anaesthesia. This means you will be asleep during the operation.
What are the side effects of labiaplasty?
With any surgical procedure, there are risks involved and most problems are easily treated and settle with time. Generally speaking, cosmetic surgery is quite safe as it is sought by healthy and fit individuals seeking improvement in the appearance.
General risks of any surgery include excessive bleeding, reaction to any of the medications (including anaesthesia), infection, poor healing or excessive scarring.
The occurrence of such complications depends mainly on whether you smoke, your general health status, how your body heals, as well as your post-operative recovery. Dr. Verma will discuss all risks and complications with you during a consultation, as well as techniques and medications which can minimize risks.
What are the risks and complications of labiaplasty?
Particular risks and complications associated with labiaplasty include:
- Excessive bleeding and pain
- Excessive swelling or hematoma
- Under or over correction
- Change in sensation or a numbness of the labia
- Infected wounds
- Wound healing delays
Recovery after Labiaplasty
Care of your wounds
You will be provided with detailed instructions by Finesse Cosmetic Surgery with regards to care of your sutures, wounds etc. as well as advice regarding showering and bathing. Icepacks applied to the area in the initial two days after surgery are useful in the management of swelling and pain relief.
Other post-surgery lifestyle modification recommendations for six to eight weeks after your procedure will include wearing loose clothing and avoiding tight under-garments including and not wearing jeans or other clothing that may cause rubbing. You will need to avoid having a bath or go swimming until healing has completed.
In most instances, you will be able to return and work and other normal activities ten days after your surgery.
All vigorous physical activity, as well as sexual activity and the use of tampons, must be avoided for a period of six weeks after surgery. This is because exercise, friction, and arousal stimulate blood flow to the vagina which can induce complications including bleeding, swelling and discoloration.
When will you see results?
Results will be visible after your tissues heal when swelling and bruising subside which may take between 3 – 6 weeks. You can expect to see full results around 6 months after your surgery.
What will be your follow up schedule?
Dr. Verma will see you one week post the operation and then organize subsequent follow-ups according to how you recover. All follow-up visit costs up to three months after the operation are included in the cost of the surgery. Revision surgery for any complications carries an extra charge.
Similar to your initial consultation, Dr. Verma will be taking photographs in order to document healing during follow up visits.
How long do the effects of labiaplasty last for?
The effects from labiaplasty surgery are permanent.
